Postdoctoral Position (f/m/d): MESH hub – Multidisciplinary Environmental Studies in the Humanities

The University of Cologne is one of the largest and most research-intensive universities in Germany, offering a wide range of subjects. Led by Humboldt Professor Kate Rigby, the research hub MESH addresses the social, cultural and ethical dimensions of global environmental change, together with its associated ecological, climate and health crises. Bringing the historical, philosophical, literary, linguistic and cultural anthropological expertise of the humanities into conversation with the natural and social sciences, MESH fosters high-profile research and knowledge exchange across three main areas of enquiry: (1) decolonial cultural ecologies; (2) multispecies conviviality; and (3) disaster preparedness (for further information see: https://mesh.uni-koeln.de/).


YOUR TASKS

  • independent academic research in areas of enquiry relevant to the programme at MESH
  • collaboration on MESH’s research activities (conferences/workshops, pu- blications, grant applications)
  • teaching and assessment duties on academic courses at BA and MA-le- vel (2 SWS, i.e. 1 weekly 90-min seminar per semester)
  • administrative duties

YOUR PROFILE

  • excellent doctoral degree in a field relevant to the environmental humanities
  • ability to undertake research projects with a high degree of independ- ence
  • keen interest and experience in interdisciplinary research and collab- oration
  • good communication skills, fluency in English (for non-German speak- ers: willingness to acquire proficiency in German within first two years after taking up the post)
  • internationally-visible publications and experience with acquisition of third-party funding desirable

The position is available from October 1st, 2022 on a full-time basis (although part-time options can be discussed if necessary). The position is to be filled for a fixed term until 30.09.2026. If the necessary prerequisites required by tariff regulations as well as the sought-after personal qualifica- tions are met, the salary will correspond to the pay grade 13 as specified in the States’Tariff Agreement (TVL).
