02 Aug Call for Collaborations Expression of Interest: Hosting an Occupy Climate Change! School
Occupy Climate Change! (OCC!) was a research project funded by the Swedish Council for Sustainable Development (FORMAS) and ran from 2019 to 2022. The project investigated grassroots social innovations addressing climate change through in-depth case studies in Malmö (Sweden), New York City (USA), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Naples (Italy), and Istanbul (Turkey).
One of the project’s most significant outputs is the Atlas of the Other Worlds (https://occupyclimatechange.net/), a georeferenced database featuring two types of entries: brief reports on grassroots climate action and a collection of sci-fi-inspired creative writings. Many of these entries were contributed by students from around the world who participated in OCC! Schools.
As the Atlas reveals, we currently have no contributions from Australia—largely due to time zone differences, which previously made participation challenging for students from the region.
Even after the project’s formal conclusion and the end of its funding, we chose to carry forward the OCC! initiative by developing an online, interdisciplinary school. This school promotes a radical, humanities-driven approach to climate change. It is open to early-career researchers (PhD students and postdocs), master’s students, activists, journalists, and anyone interested in exploring these themes. All participants contribute to the Atlas of the Other Worlds with original research or creative work.
We are now seeking colleagues in Australia interested in organizing a local OCC! School. This could take the form of either an online or in-person event. Further details about the format and structure of the school can be found in this document (https://docs.google.com/document/d/15XsiocXpDqUNNDHDhZI_UV41sn3O-Xlalh2znm1RDyY/edit?usp=sharing).
